Regifting your gifts

We’re only human and, while we appreciate the thought that went into all our Christmas gifts, there may be some we just know we aren’t going to use.

Whether it’s a scarf that isn’t your style, a book you’ve read already, or 10 bottles of body lotion, don’t put them away in a cupboard to gather dust – why not find something better to do with them instead?

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure after all, and you could end up helping local people and organisations into the bargain.

1

Sell and donate

Using sites like eBay, Amazon, Gumtree, Depop and Vinted lets you sell almost anything – and you can donate the proceeds to a local charity of your choice.

2

Give to charity

Take your unwanted items to a local charity shop; you’ll be giving something a new lease of life and helping raise money for good causes. The Rowan’s Hospice is one of the Mayor’s charities of the year and has 17 shops across Portsmouth and Southeast Hampshire.

3

Support your local school or library

See if your child’s school or your local library would appreciate a donation of any new educational or fictional books. Schools may also welcome other items that can be sold at various fundraising events.

4

Donate to a care home

Scarves, hand lotions, books, blankets – these might be greatly appreciated by care home residents or could be sold to raise money. Do call your care home first to make sure they accept donations.

5

Support a food bank

If you were given food items you can’t eat or aren’t keen on, donate them to your local foodbank – just make sure you check the use-by dates. Find out more here https://friendsofthehomeless.org.uk/
