An Autumn walk at Titchfield Canal

Head out on a 7.1-km trail near Fareham, to experience flourishing local wetlands and thriving wildlife.

This is the perfect place for those who love to explore, with lots of farmer’s bridges and extra public footpaths if you are looking for a diversion.

The trail offers a wide variety of seasonal bird species, amongst an abundance of many more wildlife. This area is ideal for birdwatching, so keep your eyes peeled!

The canal runs adjacent to Titchfield Haven National Reserve, so it can be used as an accessibility path if stretches of the walk become muddy and impassable. However, this does come with an entry fee.

Titchfield Canal is a 2.1-mile stretch from the seafront to the centre of Titchfield. You can easily walk from either direction, with parking at Salterns, or on Cliff Road.

  • Cliff Road, Fareham PO14 3LU
  • Bridge Street, Titchfield, Fareham PO14 4EA

The reserve has a café and shop, in addition to small villages at both end of the canal.

Or, you can visit Titchfield Mill, with origins dating back as far as 1779, for a well-deserved drink and country pub classics meal.

Your four-legged friends are more than welcome to join you on the journey. Enjoy the easy-access entrance steps to the water, where they can jump in for a quick paddle or have a splash!

The Walk

From the car park turn left, through the kissing gate, onto the path that leads alongside the canal. Continue along this path, straight past two farmers’ bridge across the canal, until after some distance you will see a third bridge across the canal with a rights of way marker on a post.

Go through the narrow gap, around the wooden post and over the bridge, which will lead you onto a track, curving round to the right, through farmland. Continue straight along this path northwards between the fields, past a number of turnings, until after some distance a track cuts across.

Straight ahead you will see a stile leading to a path that runs alongside a horse field. Go over this stile and follow the path over the stile at the other end, where you will enter a housing estate.

Follow the road out of the housing estate turning into Lower Bellfield, which will lead you to Coach Hill. Turn right on Coach Hill and continue down to the mini roundabout, where you will need to turn right into Bridge Street. Follow Bridge Street carefully until you see the car park to your right.

Travel directions

From M27 Junction 9 follow signs for the A27. You will quickly reach a large roundabout. Take the turning for the A27 East, towards Fareham. Go straight ahead at the first roundabout.

You will pass a set of traffic lights – get in the right hand lane and follow the right hand turn in a loop around. The second turning off this loop is to Titchfield Village – take this and follow this road which turns left through the village centre (High Street).

Continue along High Street until you reach a mini roundabout. Take a left hand turn into Bridge Street. Directly after you cross the canal you will see a turning to the right, off which is a small car park.
